Frequently Asked Questions

Groucho's Deli is known for its hot, open-faced Dipper sandwiches and its signature Formula 45 sauce. Harold "Groucho" Miller founded Groucho's in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1941. Today it's a fast-casual neighborhood deli that serves made-to-order warm deli sandwiches, fresh salads and award-winning sweet tea, all made with fresh, never-frozen ingredients. The deli still uses the founder's original recipes for potato salad, coleslaw and dressings, and it still follows his motto: "Quality is the most important ingredient in a sandwich."

What sets Groucho's Deli apart is more than eight decades of history and signature recipes you won't find anywhere else. Its trademarked Dipper sandwiches came out in the 1960s. They're served hot and open-faced with a side of sauce for dipping. The most famous sauce is Formula 45, a tangy housemade dressing perfected in 1945. Groucho's still makes the founder's original potato salad, coleslaw, and dressings, and it builds every sandwich to order with fresh, whole-muscle protein and produce. Groucho's has grown into one of the Southeast's best-known deli brands, but each location is still meant to be "Your Neighborhood Deli." That means fast, friendly service and roots in the local community, not just another chain stop.

A Dipper is a Groucho's Deli original: a hot, open-faced sub served with a side of sauce for dipping. Most guests choose Formula 45, a tangy dressing perfected in 1945. Groucho's Deli introduced Dippers in the 1960s, and the best-known are the STP Dipper and the Apollo Dipper, named after the Apollo space capsule.

Groucho's Deli in downtown Statesville is truly a wonderful little place, and our experience was nothing short of fantastic! One of the things I personally love about this location is its history. Growing up in Statesville during the 1980s, I remember when this very building was Holmes Drug. Walking inside today, there's still that nostalgic, old-fashioned diner atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The long, narrow layout with booths lining both sides, larger tables in the back for families and gatherings, and historical photographs of the building from years gone by give it such a welcoming charm. The restaurant was also exceptionally clean and orderly. The tables were spotless, the floors were swept, and everything was neat and well-maintained. Now, let's talk about the food! I ordered the BLC Chicken Critter, and my fiancé ordered the STP Dipper. Both were absolutely delicious! Our sandwiches arrived piping hot, practically steaming, with wonderfully soft bread and generous portions of meat and toppings. Nothing about these sandwiches was skimpy! You could genuinely taste the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Each meal came with a bag of chips, a pickle, and our choice of beverage. We both enjoyed fountain Mountain Dew. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. We were thoroughly impressed! The customer service deserves just as much praise as the food. Our waitress, who also handled our checkout, was an absolute sweetheart! She was friendly, attentive, and genuinely accommodating. She checked on us several times, made sure we had everything we needed, and offered to answer any questions, especially since this was my fiancé's first visit. We also inquired about catering, and she happily provided a pamphlet, explained some of the available options, and directed us to the appropriate person for additional information. What really stood out was that, as we were leaving, she even offered to refill our drinks so we could head out with full cups. It's those little gestures of kindness that make such a lasting impression. Something else I find especially wonderful about Groucho's Deli is their dedication to giving back. Through their Gift-A-Meal program, guests can scan a QR code and share a photo of their meal, helping fund the distribution of 1.2 pounds of healthy groceries to a local food bank. They also embrace #GrouchosGoodness, a philosophy centered around community, gratitude, tradition, and bringing people together. I love seeing a business that values not only the food it serves but also the community it serves. From the nostalgic atmosphere and exceptional cleanliness to the delicious food, generous portions, and genuinely outstanding hospitality, Groucho's Deli exceeded our expectations. An easy 10/10 from both of us! We will absolutely be returning, and I would wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful little downtown gem to anyone looking for a fantastic meal and an equally fantastic experience!
